How conflict threatens culture

Get started

Conflict and culture

A culture survives because people keep it going. They speak its languages, follow its beliefs, pass on its stories and care for the buildings, statues and places that hold its history. Conflict can break that chain in two main ways.

  1. By harming the people who carry a culture. When a group is persecuted or killed, the traditions, knowledge and ways of life it holds can vanish along with it.
  2. By destroying shared heritage. Monuments and historic sites can be wrecked on purpose, cutting the link between people and their past.

Throughout history, conflict in many forms has damaged culture in both of these ways. Some of the damage happens slowly, over years of unfair treatment. Some happens in a single day. To judge how serious a threat is, ask two questions. Who or what is being targeted? Can the loss ever be undone?
