Thinking about culture
Culture is a word people use all the time without stopping to ask what it means. A good place to start is with what you already think.
The 3, 2, 1 bridge is a short thinking routine. Working on your own, write down:
- 3 thoughts about the word 'culture'
- 2 questions you have about it
- 1 analogy for it (culture is like...)
Then take turns reading your ideas with a classmate. Notice where your ideas match and where they differ. Keep what you wrote, because the same routine is worth repeating at the end of the unit. Putting the two versions side by side shows how your understanding has grown.
Two debatable questions sit behind any study of culture. Do animals have culture? Can culture be defined at all? Neither has one agreed answer. Your job is to build an argument for your view using evidence.
