Fairness and development
Some people live with more than they could ever use, while others struggle to find their next meal. This unit asks why that happens and what could make societies fairer.
The unit sits in the global context of global interactions, which means the ways people and countries around the world connect and depend on each other. It uses two related concepts, resources and equality.
The big idea that guides a unit. Here it is that societies can grow and become fairer when people have resources and equal opportunities, and that this often depends on global interactions.
The inquiry is driven by three kinds of question.
- Factual: What is poverty? What is development and how is it measured? How can resources help reduce extreme poverty? What is aid?
- Conceptual: What factors influence how a country develops?
- Debatable: What do we need? Is health linked to wealth?
The unit has three goals. The first is to find out about poverty around the world and what it leads to. The second is to explore what helps a country develop. The third is to take action by thinking about, and acting on, issues in your own local community.

Use see-think-wonder on the photo of the hand holding coins. First list only what you can see (no guesses yet). Then say what you think is going on.
Finally, write down what it makes you wonder. Keep your wonder questions, because many of them return later in the unit.
