Introduction to Three-Set Venn Diagrams

You already know how Venn diagrams can show relationships between two sets. Now we level up , three overlapping circles let us map out far more complex situations in one clean picture.

When three sets A, B, and C all overlap inside a universal set U, the diagram creates seven distinct regions inside the circles, plus one region outside all three.

Three-Set Venn Diagram: A diagram using three overlapping circles inside a rectangle (universal set U), where each circle represents one set and overlapping regions represent elements belonging to more than one set.

Think of it like a club membership chart , a student can belong to just one club, two clubs, or all three at once. The Venn diagram keeps track of exactly who belongs where.

The Eight Regions of a Three-Set Diagram

Three overlapping sets create eight distinct regions in total. Understanding each region is the key to reading and filling in these diagrams correctly.

Here is what each region represents:

  1. Only in A , elements in A but not in B or C
  2. Only in B , elements in B but not in A or C
  3. Only in C , elements in C but not in A or B
  4. A and B only , in both A and B, but not C
  5. A and C only , in both A and C, but not B
  6. B and C only , in both B and C, but not A
  7. A and B and C , in all three sets (the central region)
  8. Outside all sets , in U but not in A, B, or C
Exam Tip

Always start filling in a three-set Venn diagram from the centre outward. Put the "all three" value in the middle first, then work through the pairwise overlaps, and finally fill in the "only" regions.

Warning

When a problem says "A and B", it usually means all elements shared by A and B , including those also in C. But "A and B only" means those in A and B but not in C. Read problem wording very carefully!
