Migration and population change
A country's population changes in three ways. People are born, people die, and people move. Births and deaths together give the natural increase (or decrease) of a population, which the lesson on components of population growth covers in detail. Movement is the third component, and it can change a population significantly.
The movement of people from one place to another to live.
When migration crosses a national border, it has a different name depending on which side you are standing on.
Moving into a country to live there.
Moving out of a country to live somewhere else.
One journey is both at once. A person who leaves Country A for Country B is an emigrant from A and an immigrant to B. So migration takes people away from one population and adds them to another, and both places feel the effect.
A memory hook that works: Emigration is Exiting, Immigration is coming In.
People move for many reasons, and they choose where to go for many reasons too. Geographers sort these moves into types so they can compare them.
