What Is a Pure Substance?
Pure Substance: A pure substance contains only one type of particle , either a single element or a single compound , with no other substances mixed in.
In everyday language, we use the word "pure" to mean clean or natural. In science, it has a very specific meaning: a pure substance contains nothing else mixed into it.
There are two categories of pure substances:
- Elements , made of only one type of atom (e.g. pure gold, pure oxygen gas, pure iron)
- Compounds , made of two or more types of atoms chemically bonded together in a fixed ratio (e.g. pure water H₂O, pure salt NaCl, pure sugar C₆H₁₂O₆)
Even though water is made of two elements (hydrogen and oxygen), it is still a pure substance because it contains only one type of compound. The key is that every particle in the sample is identical.
Pure substances have sharp, fixed physical properties , a specific melting point, boiling point, and density. Scientists use these properties as a way to identify substances and check their purity.
What Is an Impure Substance (Mixture)?
Mixture: A mixture contains two or more different substances that are physically combined but not chemically bonded. Each substance keeps its own properties.
Most substances we encounter in daily life are mixtures , they contain more than one pure substance blended together. Some everyday examples include:
- Air , a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide, and other gases
- Seawater , water mixed with dissolved salts and minerals
- Soil , a mixture of minerals, organic matter, water, and air
- Blood , a mixture of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets
- Alloys like brass , a mixture of copper and zinc
Think of a pure substance like a playlist with only one song repeated over and over , every track is identical. A mixture is like a shuffle playlist , many different songs (substances) all together, but each song (substance) is still itself and hasn't changed.
Key features of mixtures:
- The components are not chemically bonded , no new substance is formed
- Each component retains its own properties
- The composition can vary , you can have more or less of each component
- Components can usually be separated by physical methods
