What even is a 'type' of number , and why does it matter?

Every time your calculator spits out a never-ending, never-repeating decimal, something interesting is happening , that number literally cannot be written as a fraction. That's not a rounding issue. That's a fundamental property of the number itself. Understanding types of numbers means you can answer questions like "is this exact or approximate?" and "does this belong here?" with confidence instead of guessing.

The entire real number system is organised like a set of Russian nesting dolls. The smallest doll sits inside a bigger one, which sits inside a bigger one still. Each layer is a set , a collection of numbers sharing a defining property.

Definition

A set is a collection of objects. Each individual object inside it is called an element (or member) of that set. When every element of set also belongs to set , we say is a subset of , written .

The symbol means "is an element of", so reads as "3 is an integer." Watch out: makes sense, but writing is meaningless , 3 is a number, not a set, so it can't be a subset of anything.
