How cells divide

Get started

Why don’t your cells just keep getting bigger?

Your body gets larger mostly by adding more cells, not by turning each cell into a giant version of itself. If a cell keeps expanding, it runs into transport and control problems, so splitting is the smarter option. When one cell becomes two, each new cell is small enough to work efficiently again.

When materials move in and out of your cells, they usually rely on diffusion. That means oxygen and nutrients have to travel from the outside membrane toward the middle, while wastes have to get back out. In an oversized cell, the centre is too far away, so this movement becomes too slow for your cell’s needs.

The membrane also stops keeping up with what the inside demands. If a cell’s width doubles, the outside area becomes 4 times larger, but the inside space becomes 8 times larger. So your cell gains internal volume faster than it gains exchange surface. When you talk about this balance between outer area and inner space, that’s the

surface area to volume ratio , a comparison showing how much membrane your cell has available compared with how much living material inside needs support.

Your nucleus has a limit too. It sends out instructions, including mRNA, to control what happens in the cytoplasm. If the cell becomes huge, those messages take longer to reach distant parts, and one nucleus ends up trying to manage too much at once.

Dividing fixes all three issues at the same time. Two smaller cells give you a shorter travel distance for diffusion, a better total amount of membrane for exchange, and a more manageable amount of cytoplasm for each nucleus to control. > Example: That’s why an elephant isn’t built from giant cells. Your cells and an elephant’s cells are roughly similar in size; the elephant just has far more of them.

Analogy

Think about a group chat with 20 people versus one with 2,000. In the huge chat, messages get buried, replies take longer, and everything becomes messy. It works better when the same people are split into smaller chats. Your cells do the same kind of problem-solving by dividing.
