Reproduction and life cycles

Get started

Why do life cycles look so different across species?

You might think every living thing grows up the same way, but your life cycle is just one of many possible paths. Every species faces its own set of problems, like dodging predators, finding food, or surviving harsh weather, and those challenges shape how it grows, changes, and reproduces. That's why a butterfly's journey from egg to adult looks nothing like yours.

When you talk about a "life cycle," you're describing the full journey from birth, through all the changes you go through, to the point where you can make the next generation, and eventually, to death.

Definition

When you trace all the stages an organism passes through from its start to its end, including how it reproduces, you’re talking about its life cycle.

No matter how different these journeys look, every sexual life cycle always includes three core stages: making gametes, combining them, and making sure the chromosome count stays steady. But the way these stages play out can be wildly different depending on the species.
