Body temperature and balance

Get started

Why does your body need to keep its internal conditions steady?

If your phone overheats, it shuts down to protect itself. Your body does the same thing, but way more subtly: your cells can only do their jobs if the environment inside you stays just right. When your temperature, water levels, or blood sugar drift out of range, the tiny machines inside your cells (called enzymes) start to mess up or even stop working. That means you lose energy, feel sick, or worse. Even if you're sweating on a hot day or haven't eaten in hours, your body works behind the scenes to keep things balanced so you can keep moving.
