Why do you need to break down your food before your body can use it?
You might think eating a sandwich means your body can instantly use all those nutrients, but that's not how it works. The food you eat is made up of massive molecules, like proteins, fats, and starches, that are way too big to slip through the walls of your gut and into your bloodstream. Your digestive system's job is to chop these giants into much smaller pieces, like glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids, that your cells can actually absorb and use.
When you break down food into these building blocks, that's called
digestion
. Without this process, your meals would just pass through your system without providing any real energy or nutrients. So, every bite you take has to be broken down before it can power your muscles, brain, or even help you grow taller.
